In a surprise move by Paramount+, several content previously available on the service have returned after being removed back in 2024. These content were removed at the time where Paramount was struggling to hit profitability with Paramount+ and these content were considered “low rated” by the executives.
The content removed were:
- All That (Season 4-5)
- Blood & Treasure
- Caroline in the City
- College Hill
- Crank Yankers
- Half & Half
- Moesha (Season 2-5)
- Sabrina the Teenage Witch (Season 4-7)
- Sister, Sister (Season 2-6)
- The Adventures of Paddington
- True Jackson, VP (Season 2)
- Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan (Season 3)
- Weeds
- Younger
But why bring them back? Well, a lot of the content were popular at the time they were airing on TV. Streaming wise? It’s a Wild West for guessing, especially if they don’t hit Nielsen’s Top 10s list.
When Warner Bros. Discovery (soon to be under Paramount Skydance; if they merge) removed a huge chunk of content from HBO Max, that upset customers who were watching or fans of those contents. When Paramount started removing content from their service as well, this caused a stir among customers and online users.
This isn’t the first time a streaming service has removed content before, as Netflix does remove content when licenses are not renewed, originals or acquired. The difference was Paramount owns the rights to these shows above and place them (then remove them) on Paramount+.
But if you understand how industry deals work, you’d know that they still have to pay for those shows to stream it, residuals and other fees. All of that is costing, especially for unprofitable streaming services.
So the question is, will Paramount bring back more removed content to Paramount+? Well… that’s up in the air. But let me reassure you, Paramount+ is now profitable and it’s investing in more originals and licensing from third party studios. That’s because they need content.
It makes sense for them to slowly bring them back but not all at once. Right now, Weeds currently trends inside the Top 10s list on Paramount+.
But of course, only time will tell.
